Well, here goes, this is a very late upload so I hope I haven't forgotten anything or duplicated too many of the photos, either way it should be a fun way for you guys to kill 5-10 minutes in your days tomorrow

Enjoy.

This is going to be a story/build thread, as my previous thread was deleted or archived with the updates/backups to the website.

Three years ago I bought a 1997 850R from Brandon (Volvoskiah) from the NEC. The car was owned by one owner it’s whole life from 14,000 to 198,000 with immaculate records and unbelievable maintenance by a Volvo dealer out in Massachusetts. I flew out on about a weeks’ notice because I knew this wagon would not last, and this had always been the car I had wanted since I got bit by the Volvo bug in 2009!

Fast forward three years and two months ago. I had bought a 98 V70 AWD of the Coral variety with a blown motor about a year ago from a couple in Connecticut and had it towed to Brandon and Tom’s shop in Holyoke. They had a 2000R motor that they were going to throw in it when they had some time. This summer everything got put into the Coral and I was going to go pick it up. We started discussing my 855R and how I had been wanting to manual swap it for a while now. We then got the bright idea to RN/M56H swap it since my motor had 235,000 on it. Seeing as I had to go pick up the Coral anyways…. Why not drive the R up and swap it at the same time!

Many parts were bought and plans were set.  Time for pictures and shenanigans!

We left Friday, my Dad came with to drive the Coral back as I would be driving the R back. He also was the dedicated camera guy all weekend long, so 99% of these photos are credit to him, as my hands were full of grease for three straight days  A member and good friend also came with to stretch his S70’s legs before his trip to Vegas, Jay (Modman), and the project really could not have been finished without him.

This is the piece that messed up on us 50 miles into the drive home. RMS is a moody oh yeah!. New RMS will be going in on the 18th of October.  But we did replace it with a new unit and I think it may have folded in on itself but I will post an update on this come the time the engine comes out just a month after it got put in!

So this concluded Saturday, it was incredibly hot all day and it started to rain around 9pm so we headed back and ate a delicious dinner with chili as the main dish, which was absolutely amazing, made by Brandon’s mother. We also got to sit and talk about the day and the plan of action for tomorrow, seeing as we needed to get it done! Off to bed and onto 8am tomorrow morning for the final stretch!

Day 2: Sunday

Didn’t get any pictures of pulling the old out of my wagon cause my Dad was going to get breakfast for errbody. But Tom and I manhandled it like champs and got it out.

Here is how the 2.4L sat when we got the trans mated up and everything ready for the accessories to go on!

DSC_1363_zps37f125ba.jpg

Here is an issue we ran into. This I'm dumb exhaust stud broke in the head as we were pulling off the old exhaust manifold. My Dad worked on it for about 4 hours on Sunday trying everything we could, but to no avail, so when we put the exhaust gaskets on we slathered the entire backside with an exhaust manifold gasket sealant, so far it has held up great and no leaks. I’ll eventually get a new head in the future I’m sure so that’ll solve that problem when I swap it, but it’s working great right now

DSC_1364_zpsda9ebb9c.jpg

Jay taking a well-deserved break, he put pretty much all the accessory brackets and associated parts on the new motor… what a guy!

Now I know everyone has seen an engine being lifted into a Volvo before, but damn this took precision and lots of patience with having to have the door open, to closing it, to opening it part of the way, to closing it again! But she’s in.

This really captures what a great bunch of guys you all are. I cannot thank you enough for everything you did to help all weekend, you are all truly great friends :)

After that Jay had to leave due to work the next day at 3pm so we had to say goodbye and he started the 14 hour journey home!

Brand New Oem S60R Covers From Tasca (Kinda Cheap!)

So I bought the 3 S60R covers from Tasca recently. Along with the IPD polished bolts during their summer sale. The 3 R covers were surprisingly cheap, the top two (the important ones) are only $43 for both, and the side cover is $42. So for $85, pretty awesome deal.

Back In The Volvo World

Hey guys, after three years, I'm glad to be back in the Volvo world.  Hopefully I posted this in the right area, my beloved Volvospeed has changed a bit since I was gone.

I picked up this '95 850 Turbo sedan from a guy who was the original owner.  He was the type that would take it to the dealer whenever there was an issue with it, so it's in really amazing condition mechanically.  The interior and exterior look pretty good for 176,000 miles, and the turbo still pulls pretty hard.  I will be tearing it apart over the next few months and hopefully give it a real kick in the pants to spice it up.  Best part of the whole deal was I got it for $500.  Not too shabby in my opinion.  Have an awesome weekend!

Bought $9,700 Pegs

Here it is. In case you live in a box and didn't figure it out by now. I sold all my cars (the GLT, 99 V70R, and 98 T5M) and picked up a 2004 M66 V70R. I bought it off of Swedespeed, messaged the seller a few hours after it was posted and agreed to purchase it that evening. I flew out to Seattle to pick it up. Flew out to Seattle on a Friday night, the same night that some dick out of Chicago tried to set the city on fire and delayed/cancelled a ton of flights. Spent Saturday and part of Sunday in Seattle and drove home Sunday and Monday. Unfortunately I was sick on Tuesday and didn't make it into work.

Enough of the sexting, here's some more pictures.

In Seattle:

20140928_093345_zpsdwpoyimn.jpg

I obviously fit right in. But Seattle was really cool. We did the Market, Pioneer Square and the Space Needle on Saturday and then Bainbridge Island on Sunday. Fit a lot into a day and a half but it was great. Sidenote: holy homeless population.

20140927_113451_zpsxwobbkpi.jpg

The first day of driving:

The second day at the Badlands:

20140930_073745_zpsvf0kcgkh.jpg

Made it home with zero issues. It was an awesome drive, gorgeous the whole way, except Minnesota, that state was stupid and boring. And Wisconsin, who would live there.

The car is amazing to drive. I love it, it's so comfortable, it has great pick up. And I actually like that it's a wagon.

And here we are today. Some pictures and of course the perks and why it was worth going out to Seattle to get. The car has all the service records since it was new and all serviced at the same dealership. It was taken in for every oil change. The previous owner had a butt ton of work done since 93k miles (now at 105K):

-New clutch, slave cylinder, and flywheel resurfaced

-New front struts

-New angle gear

-More software updates than my computers combined

-New DEM

The bonuses:

-IPD HD sway bar links front and rear

-IPD sway bars

-ARD tune

-IPD strut bar conversion

What I did:

-Snabb Intake pipe

-KN filter

-OBX downpipe

-IPD TCV

Since this is the cool thing to do now, I figured I would formally introduce my wife's 97R to you guys. As I'm sure you all know, I found a Saffron V70R for her and it ended up being a money pit so we got rid of the vehicle while she was deployed and I began my search. I ended up talking to Juan and I asked about his 1997 850R white on tan and we ended up striking a deal! We flew out to pick it up and drove it from Houston TX to Mt Holly NJ (~1600 miles). Did the drive in 2 days and slept for a week LOL. She loves the car! Onto the pics

Hi VolvoSpeed family, I just wanted to share what my new winter project will be for me. I just returned to Chicago from living in France for 3 years and wanted to get back into the car scene.
First thing I purchased was KW Variant 2 coil overs , Work M1 rim 18*10 rear 18*9 front, ordered new OEM black top for the convertible , R brake kit , and little by little I'm ordering parts for the C70.
I am going to do a manual conversion and I need help resourcing parts for the conversion and I'm new to the Volvo scene so I'm having problems finding a full manual conversion parts, it will take time.
I just found out my motor is turbo and in the beginning I was planning to do a T5 motor swap but I have GT35R turbo laying around from my previous car I worked on before I left for Paris so I was happy I found out my C70 motor was already turbo. Now I'm looking into building the motor to make it strong enough to run a Gt35 turbo. I would like your thoughts and opinions on what parts would be good to build the motor.
I know the Volvo community in Chicago is small and I like challenges and something different that not a lot of people do, sorry but JDM is in my blood and for the C70 I am going to stance it out and big turbo LoL
Thank you for taking your time reading the post and hope you can give me useful advise to my build and meet up in the near future at Volvo events
Chris

I have not been visiting very often last couple of years, I yanked a few chains in the political forum recently, not much going on car wise.

well, its come to my attention that my biggest contribution has been my Christmas Poems.

I havent composed one in a year or 2. Well, I'm game to try again this year. I know its a bit early, but Ill need time to get re-acquainted with the my site buddies ( Mah minions still out there?), and get to know some new Volvo owning fools

heres the links for the poems , I guess they are not numbered correctly, I cant find one or two:

I got my old 124 back together again today and went for some driving. It's not the fastest thing ever, but it sure is fun to wind out through the gears.

8K tach installed instead of the 9k tach I'm familiar with, so my shifiting today was a bit early :)

I've found benefit in running to 9k+ in 1st and 2nd, even though the power is tapering off.

anyways, enough rambling:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFw3mgg8w3I&feature=youtu.be

Some more carb tuning with a wideband should yield better results (long overdue)

With correcting the speedo (it's not accurate due to trans swap) and looking over the video I'm right at about 7.5s 60-100. Not too bad for an "antiquated" 1756cc NA.

Any other vintage Fiat owners here care to share some in car footage?

Secret Santa Sign Up - It's That Time Of The Year!

$

0

I know I copied details from last years thread, execution should be the same, I did change dates however, so please read notes below.

I want to get this started a bit earlier, and get names out to people a bit earlier this year rather than last. I do not like seeing people not get gifts until mid to late January, because we have all come off of our holiday spirit high and many feel they had been forgotten long before then. Do not buy a gift that won't ship for 2 months, do your research and don't be a Grinch. I will close sign up on Friday November 21st, and draw names that weekend, Sunday November 23rd, that give you just over a month to buy something and have it shipped. If you have a problem shipping to Canada, or are not willing to spend an extra few bucks sending a gift up to a VolvoSpeeder in the 51st state, go ahead and do yourselves a favor and don't sign up. It's possible to order a gift from Canada, and have it shipped to an address in Canada, thus making it cheaper to ship and not breaking the bank. Consider shipping cost before buying gifts, I have no objection to spending more money (and I normally do) but I don't want anyone crying that they don't want to pay the extra $10-15 to ship something to Canada. After signing up, please send me a PM right after with your address. If you post your name on the list, please put a t-shirt size next to it, so the person who potentially gets you doesn't have to discreetly PM you through me and can easily buy a shirt if they feel so inclined.

YOU MUST BE A SUPPORTING MEMBER TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS EVENT! YOU HAVE UNTIL NOVEMBER 21ST TO BECOME ONE IF YOU WANT IN.

Who wants to do it this year? Lets get a names list going, gifts should be around $25-30 unless you get someone you wish to buy something more expensive for, but that is up to you. Lets shoot for $25-30+ shipping and for all gifts to be to the recipients house/address by Christmas. This means if you ship priority on the 20th it will arrive by Christmas (most of the time), it's not that hard.

Lets get a list going to see who might be in. It's only fair that supporting members participate since that "should" help to decrease the amount of people who get Grinched out of a gift. If you cannot afford a $25 gift, do not waste your time, it is distasteful to sign up and not give a gift, that is not in Christmas/Holiday Spirit!

List your names here, I'll run the names list through the next month or so, and on NOVEMBER 23RD names will be chosen (randomly by yours truly) and that information will be sent out to each person that has chosen to participate. If you decide to sign up, please PM me the following so that this will work smoothly. I will continually update this first post to add if you need to still send me your address.

Full Name
Street Address
City, State

Zip Code

T-Shirt Size

If your name is Red, you still need to give me your info, if it is green that means you are not a supporting member but if you wish to participate I will leave your name on the list, if you are not a supporting member by November 23rd, then you will not participate in this event, no ifs and's or buts.

Last year I made several long trips around the country and since then I keep thinking about having a topic where we can post about our future road trips. This way we can meet each other and put a face to a login name, we can give and get tips and advice on roads and last but not least we will know who to call for help when we are in need, away from home.

That being said...   tomorrow I'm going to Houston for 4 days.  :)

2006 Xc70 Build And Questions Thread - Tomedkaz

Hello,

My name is Tommy. I used to own a modified S40, then I replaced it with a 2004 S60R that is nicely modified and I still own it – loving it! I am now married, however and wanted to add to the stable something that's more versatile for camping and snowboarding trips as well as those Home Depot runs J

Initially we wanted something newer like the XC60 RD but an opportunity came up which we could not pass up: A family friend was selling his single owner 2006 XC70 with 86K miles for what the dealer offered him at trade in - $6,000! He's an 82 year old lawyer, and replaced his car with a new S class. We had to jump on this opportunity - gotta love having no car payment.

The car has been very well taken care of. It came with extras such as Bluetooth, satellite radio, hardwired GPS and Volvo cross bars and bike racks!

Next step for me is Stage 0 Stuff. After that I’ll swap some R pieces into it. I already ordered R leather gauge cluster cover and aluminum trim pieces. Will also look for 17 inch pegs.

Being a newbie to the XC I have a few questions for the eXperts:

1. How do I disable traction control? This thing has no button and nothing in the menu toggle. Even if it's pulling the fuse - I want to be able to do donuts during the winter :)

2. I want to install HID bulbs in the headlamps and fog lamps. My R runs 55W at 5000K and I love the look (or maybe it’s 4300) .. I am looking for a bright white look, nothing blue or yellow. What is the proper Wattage and K temperature to buy? Should I stick with 35W or 55W? Also, what bulb type in each?

3. What tire size do you guys recommend for 17 inch pegs to stay true to OEM? Obviously they'll be wider, but I want the speedo to be accurate.

4. The mirrors have these little rain-droplet logos on them. What does it mean?

5. I'm going to install an R steering wheel. I've got a 2004 wheel already, but need to swap out 2005 buttons (have those as well). Will I need a 2005+ airbag or will 2004 fit?

6. Will a VR rear wing fit? Do they make those without rear brake light?

7. When I'm on an off-ramp and the wheel is turned for some time, it feels like the power steering pump is pulling the wheel back then releasing...what could it be? Maybe flush the system could do the trick?

8. Need to do the timing belt. Will do the tensioner and water pump while there. Anything else to look after while that part of the engine is being worked on?

9. Is there a way to turn the rear wiper on without spraying it with washer fluid?

Thanks in advance! Now enjoy some photos

It already came in very handy. I’m moving and was able to fit a dresser, headboard and a bunch of other stuff in it. Loving the space!

Now for everything in order. Picked up the car as it looks in the first pic above. 1990 740ti, automatic, ~280k on the clock. Paid a whopping $400 for it, all it needed right off the bat was front brake pads and ball joints, both of which I replaced in the PO’s driveway. Engine was in good shape, suspension was okay, interior was okay, just dirty. Right off the bat I cut a coil or so off the springs and added an MBC to up the boost to 12psi. Momentarily still had my 960 before I sold it, so I was able to get a pic while owning two Volvos.

Kept up with routine maintenance and stage 0 steps, and shortly after purchasing the car I pulled a 15h from a junkyard 850 and rebuilt it on my living room table. Before installing it, I took the car to the dragstrip for a bendhmark run, and in stock form minus the MBC it ran a 15.9. Then one weekend I installed the 15g along with a kevlar timing belt, 100amp alternator and a few other odds n ends. Polished up my valve cover and intecooler pipes as well. With the car stock other than the 15g, I went back to the dragstrip and managed a 15.2, hitting fuel cut in the middle of the run.

After that I picked up a set of Voxx MG 17x8 wheels locally and tossed those on, and I also installed some billy HD struts and shocks and some IPD 25mm sways, and cut another coil off the springs while I had everything apart.

Next up came a 25x12x3 ebay intercooler and some silicone couplers. Made a significant difference on boost onset and also kept intake temperatures down.

Eventually ended up deleting all my a/c components one day. It didn’t work in the car so I removed it all to get better flow to the intercooler. In retrospect I wish I would have left it in or at least kept the parts instead of trashing them, because I’m now planning a +a/c job eventually.

Shortly after that I installed a PLX wideband and some fuel & spark chips from thelostartof on turbobricks. These eliminated fuel cut and raised the redline to 6500rpm, along with giving better fuel and spark maps.

DSCN0749.jpg

Next came an RSI stage II camshaft and an IPD adjustable cam gear. Had to source some thick shims to maintain stock valve lash.

DSCN0774.jpg

EDC16879-60D6-43D0-B37C-D9CA0BB58879-197

RSI left, stock T cam right.

DSCN0775.jpg

DSCN0776.jpg

Dat duration though.

Cam gave a noticeable difference right off the bat. +6º on the cam gear made it even more enjoyable. The low end grunt of the t cam wasn’t quite as noticeable, but at about 3k rpm the wagon really starts to haul a** and pulls all the way to redline, whereas the t cam would pull hard down low but fall on its face past 4.5k.

After that I installed a catch can to minimize excessive blowby, and also installed some Yoshifab phenolic intake spacers and a cleaned and repainted intake manifold. Replaced the coolant temp sensor and my heater core hoses too while I had everything apart. Also added some Ford brown top injectors, a new FPR, new silicone couplers, new 8mm plug wires and some plug boot heat shields.

29FDEC62-3443-439C-923F-CD865B19BBA2-561

With all these upgrades I hit up the dragstrip one more time, but couldn’t hold traction no matter how I launched. I would either spin off the line, or if I didn’t launch as hard I’d still spin because the a** end would still start to kick out when boost hit. Figured it was because of the open diff, so I decided it was time to source a G80 locker rear end. Grabbed one from the junkyard and did both the rear axle swap and the accumulator mod on my AW71. Tossed on a new rear main seal and a better torque converter while I had the transmission off. New starter was also added around this time too.

ED297E41-1060-4D59-9C21-FAA9A7E585D5-642

With all these upgrades added and maintenance done, the wagon was running great and was a lot of fun to drive, so I turned my attention to the interior. Scored most of a black interior from a local friend’s 945 which was totalled in a rear end incident, and did a partial swap, along with adding a grip royal steering wheel and a better gauge pod. Was given a 5 bar oil pressure gauge, sourced a sender recently but haven’t gotten around to wiring it up.

47D460DB-13A7-4B74-BFC0-64E78687FAA3-206

Shortly thereafter I bought an Ultra Racing strut brace from ebay, but out of the packaging it wouldn’t fit over the studs properly. I had to cut about 1/4” out of one of the brackets and weld the end back on for it to mount right. Gave it a coat of blue paint and it fits great now, however I’ll have clearance issues with the a/c dryer once I get around to adding it again.

Then I ended up getting bored with the faded, peeling, and otherwise crappy looking silver paint, so I got motivated one night and did this:

AFE22D62-0A61-42D6-8B87-963019EB1AD3.jpg

DSCN0830.jpg

DSCN0810.jpg

Used a can of Home Depot exterior paint, some foam rollers and some of those little foam brushes from kindergarten arts and crafts day, and got this done in a few hours one night. Wheels were done with rustoleum gold metallic and clear coat. No sanding or prepping was done whatsoever, just pressure washed the car at the local DIY carwash and taped it off in my garage. Couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. The stripes you see on it are a recreation of the 700 series Euro Stripe Kit that Volvo used to offer. Took me a long time to recreate but I did it at my graphics business primarily for sedans, but I also did this wagon version as a trial run for my wagon.

Next came some 32mm adapter style spacers to push the wheels out a bit more. Took lots of work on the fenders to get them to clear okay, but I was happy with it once I got them working. Also broke out the can of green paint (I had quite a bit leftover) and added some to the bumpers to follow the SE paint scheme.

14741313707_c59a78e524_o.jpg

Just last month I picked up a ported 90+ manifold, a ported angled turbine housing and a 3” downpipe from a local Volvo guy, and installed all of it along with a 16t that I had sitting on the shelf for some time. Also got my greedy BOV to work properly, and blocked off the CBV with a kinugawa block off plate.

And finally, most recent task I’ve completed is fitting some 16” BBS style 5 wheels (the 16” version of the popular RC090) by using some 32mm 108-120 adapters. Gives them an effective offset of -9. Picked them up with tires for $100 from my best friend who was using them on his drift e46. Gave the centers a quick coat of gold paint, and that’s how the car sits now. I'm loving how it looks with these wheels, and it slides much better with them as well.

Future plans/mods include: adding a/c back, different tires (shorter/wider), installing several poly suspension bushings I have sitting on the shelf, adjustable panhard bar, better exhaust, possible manual swap..
