An Old White Sedan

Haven't done one of these new car progress threads before, but I'll try it. This is the '99 S70 AWD I picked up last week. I'm still not 100% sure what direction I will take it mod-wise, but an XC-ification is possible.

First mod, because I can't stand waterfall grilles:

So i figured id start documenting the project, since i never did with the yellow and I'm kind of regretting it.

so here are the details, its a 84' 242 with around 180k on it, completely stock when i got it, and the body is super straight.

next got some IPD parts installed on the car before picking it up. I flew up to Portland last friday and planned to drive it back to SoCal over the weekend, so a tune up was completed as well.

Chuck (Mossback) met me and my buddy at the airport to go pick up the car and we needed a beer shortly after

after picking up the car i posted on Tbricks that i wanted a flathood, and while i was up in Oregon swap was completed to single rounds

So now the trip started. amazing drive down the 1 in Cali. didn't take enough ics by far due to having to hustle back to work, but here are a few

most of the drive through Oregon and most of the tip of NorCal was super foggy

S40 T4 Race Car Build

$

Firstly, a big friendly "hello" from me. I'm a Volvo fan from Johannesburg South Africa and I thought I'd share my latest project with you all. I'm in the process of building a S40 T4 into a BTCC replica to race here in South Africa. I bought the car in January this year and have been hard at work getting it ready to race. When I got the car it had a bad bearing knock...so I took the motor out and it looked like somebody made a real mess of rebuilding the engine. Firstly the valve timing was out and on further inspection I found that the big end on cylinder 3 had no bearings at all!

Below is a photo of the car when I took delivery

20150117_104758.jpg

So after taking a good look at the motor I decided to put in a low milage replacement motor. The motor is also the B4194T2 so its the "holy grail" motor for tuning.

Here is a photo of the car with the original motor out..the car was very muddy and dirty so I pressure washed it too. Being a Johannesburg car there is not one spot of rust.

20150122_102323.jpg

I managed to get a 850 single mass flywheel, four pad clutch plate and a heavy duty pressure plate for the car. So once that was all cleaned up I put it on the new motor..

20150217_124851.jpg

I also ordered a set of BC Racing coilovers for the car and a BTCC sticker kit.....

20150220_101753.jpg

20150218_131953.jpg

I then had some PCD adaptors made so that I would have more of a choice when it came to wheels. The PCD adaptors add another 20mm to the offset but I think thats probably a good thing.

So once I had the adaptors on, coilovers in and the wheels on it looked like this...

20150227_143857.jpg

I've decided to try and make my own front splitter so I sliced the front bumper in half and mounted a FMIC and started to make a mold for the splitter.

I also painted the side mirrors...

20150306_152708.jpg

Here is a pic of the car while I make the mold....

20150313_151559.jpg

I'm going to trim the front of the splitter as I think it extends to far forward. But basically this is where I'm at at the moment. A bigger radiator is going to be installed as well as the plumbing for the intercooler......

Considering Buying 850R Long Distance - Any Advice For Smooth Transaction?

$
0
0

I'm sure a lot of you know the story about my 850R that was hit by a front end loader by now, and my search for a replacement hasn't yet and isn't likely to turn up any options with the potential of a face-to-face transaction any time soon (I bought the first one that I could buy face to face after searching for 8 months, and I definitely can't wait that long this time). A few of the caRs I've found have been owned by forum members or other Volvo enthusiasts who I would feel perfectly comfortable dealing with in a long distance deal, but the current leader is definitely not owned by a Volvo enthusiast.

So I'm curious, have any of you guys done long distance transactions with non-forum members? If so, how did you arrange the transaction to make sure that you didn't get ripped off?

I'd like to try to make something happen with this caR if it continues to look as good as it has so far, especially since it's at high risk of being lost if someone doesn't make a deal on it soon (the current owner is short on space and seriously considering parting it out due to blown head gasket and subsequent frozen water in engine). I need to get some higher quality pictures, but, from what I've seen so far, it appears to be in almost perfect shape in and out....aside from the engine, obviously. Heck, working engine or not, it's not often that a red 850R with a good body comes up for sale....not to mention that I wouldn't have to pay for another engine that I don't need and would get to use the loss of my 850R to save another thereby having no net loss of 850Rs as a result of my front-end loader incident.

But at the same time, I want even more to make sure this transaction goes smoothly should I decide to go for this caR, so any input would be much appreciated.

New To Owning A Volvo

Hello there! My name is Robert and I picked up my first Volvo off a friend last weekend after itching to buy it for almost 3 years. It's a 2001 S60 T5 with a M56 transmission, of course it has the spaceball shifter which I am looking to replace with a leather boot and new knob.

This car has been extremely well maintained its entire life by the previous owner (minus the paint, he never had it detailed).

IMG_1776.JPG

Plenty of maintenance and modifications planned in the very short future. Going to start off with the basics such as replacing the timing belt and water pump, oil and gear oil change, replace the broken head light lens, replace the destroyed fog lamp, and replace the clutch position sensor to fix the dang cruise control.

Once all that fun stuff is done begins the tinkering. I would appreciate any suggestions on what steps to take before implementing any of my current planned mods:

BS Racing ZG01BR Coilovers (currently have 2 blown shocks on opposite corners)

OBX-R Stainless Steel turbo downpipe

Phuzzy Motorsports P2 - PhMIC 4th Gen FMIC upgrade with solid intercooler piping and meth injection port for future upgrades

IPD HD-TCV (Current one is on its way out causing some issues)

IPD Heavy Duty compressor bypass valve (current one is worn out causing some issues)

Redline MTL Gear Oil

IPD replacement PCV Breather System kit

IPD Mesh Grille

IPD Strut Bar Conversion Kit

I will also be upgrading the sound system in the car immediately with a 3 way Focal component system for the front doors and appropriately size coaxial rear door and deck speakers.

I am very open to any and all input regarding what I have planned. I'm not looking to immediately up the boost from the turbo, the will be a longer term project. I look forward to being an active member of this forum and have already found quite a few different threads that have provided very useful information

I'm heading out to Chuckwalla Raceway this Sunday March 29th. If  anyone wants to meet up out there to talk Volvo, please do.  I can also take passengers out onto the track.  If you' ve been thinking of tracking your car, come check it out.  This is a safe, controlled environment, and I have years of racing experience :arob:  so no need to worry.

All you need is a helmet to do a ride along. Chuckwalla charges $10 to get into the facility.

Its also a great place to work on your tan, weather report reads high of 97.

Help My 850R Insurance Claim!

$

Hey guys, the insurance company is telling me that they're planning on making me an offer on my 850R (that was wrecked by a front end loader clearing snow) this week and that any information I can provide on where the market is on these cars would be helpful.  If anyone has any information on recent sales that you that would be beneficial to my case that you could share it would be much appreciated.  I already have 3 that I'm planning on using - the black T-5R that went on ebay for $7.6k recently and that black 850R sedan with messed up paint that went for $8.2k a few days ago, and I might use a red 850R estate that was on CL for $4k with bad Nivomats and a bad headliner (I imagine those have to add up to AT LEAST $2k if you have the dealer fix them and I'm really thinking closer to $4k) and make a point of the problems that car has.

Anyway, anything anyone can share with me (saved ebay listings, CL listings, or anything else you have) that shows 850R/T-5R/Platinum Editions selling for good prices or gives an indicator of how strong this market is, I would be extremely appreciative.  I need to show these guys that book value is a joke due to all the cars sold by people who don't have a clue what they have and/or with tons of deferred maintenance trading for far below market value.

(sorry for a second thread on my problems in the same subforum in the last week...I'm sure you guys want to stop hearing about losing 850Rs as much as I want to stop talking about it, so I'm hoping this will be the final chapter of this debacle!)

New Here, 2000 S70 Glt Se

Hey guys, I just bought a 2000 s70 GLT SE with 97k miles on it.  I'm from Boston MA, currently living in Providence RI.  Car was a one owner, got a pretty good deal on it.  I'm interested in doing some mild performance mods and appearance mods (it's my daily driver).  All maintenance has been done regularly and it's in great shape.

I plan on getting an iPD intake and possibly a snabb fresh air pipe.  Is this the right pipe? http://snabb.us/Performance-Fresh-Air-Pipe-99-00-SV70-99-05-C70_p_11.html

Other than the intake setup, I'm not too sure about any other performance mods as it is my daily driver.  Anybody have any suggestions?

I had the windows tinted today, 20% in the back and 35% up front.  The back looks darker than 20% but maybe it was just the weather/needs to cure.  I bought led's for the license plate, reverse lights, and full interior.  Plan on getting 5000k hid's on the front.  Might be looking to get pegasus wheels and new tires for the summer, keep the stock wheels for the winter.

Here are some pics of the car, glad to be part of the community!

So I was reading through a fender flare thread and saw a link that was posted for fiberglass body parts. I clicked the link, and it went directly to that product, and the whole website was in another language. Luckily I put my internet buying skills to use, and figured out how to View all products for our cars! I obviously didn't check all prices, but out of 3 sets of coil overs, I converted the middle one from Swedish krona (KR) to US dollars. It came out to $610!!! For a set of coil overs!

Just thought I'd share this with everybody haha

So Melissa named the 97 Spartacus for its straight Bruteness after the engine build and the name stuck. I bought that car in 03 freshman year of college. We went through a lot and VS is a time capsule for it. It has been hit twice in the rear so im betting the frame isnt factory fresh. It was stored in a barn when i moved to chicago and ended up becoming a mouse stuff hotel. Now the body has rust in a couple places. Alas I had to move on and build something else for fun. I have wanted a C70 convertible and came across this 2000 Lpt. Plan is to swap everything over. So i introduce Spartacus II.
