Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum. I've purchased a 1997 Volvo 850 T5 Wagon.
It's in pretty good condition but going to have to replace the engine mounts. As well as rear struts. But the drive train and turbo have been well maintained. OBD-2 reader shows no codes.
Excited to meet everyone and look forward to chatting it up!
Regards,
Michael
I've got someone very special to introduce to you all............. meet Shrëk! The friendly green giant (the ë just makes it more ëuro lol!)
It's a 1997 Volvo 850 Turbo AWD with 5spd Manual M58 transmission..... said to be one of not very many. Definitely got lucky with this find....
DEFINITELY removing that fake R badge and the PowerTEK logo. Unless they made an 850 RAWD? lol
Previous owner said it had a burnt valve but we were able to drive it home. Perhaps the only 4cyl Turbo Volvo 850 on the road?
One thing that really had me attracted to this car (aside from it being 5-spd AND AWD) was the sexy ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD exhaust:
Anyways, we got to work promptly taking it apart:
Pulled the starter off and just saw how bad to the bone he really was lol! (How the hell did that get there?! )
We decided to go with the 'removing the engine frame' approach..... and with those axle nuts rust-welded onto the axes, we decided to take the whole dam front suspension along with it!
^^ Thats Engine, Transmission, Struts, Brakes and all accessories (AC, Alternator, Power Steering etc...) ^^ I will say, its VERY nice working on an engine when you can literally walk to the other side of it to pull something off....
As we pulled the head off we discovered the reason I own the thing. Behold, the burnt valve that made me a Volvo owner!
Other valves look okay, just need a bit of a grind.....
I've got the head sent off to a machine shop to test it, deck it, valve grind and grind valve seats and of course replace that burnt valve..... In the meantime we managed to get the engine off the frame:
That's basically where I'm at for now. Waiting on parts to arrive, namely a new clutch and pressure plate that will allow me to proceed in putting my new block on the car. Perfect working order and changing the motor over to a 2.3L instead of the 2.4L that came in it. My logic on this one is using the block from a working motor that didn't have an issue VS re-using Shreks original block that had PCV Diarhea allllll over the side of the block and a burnt valve which may have caused something in the bottom end? It also had 290,000kms on it vs the 150ish (I think) with the new block.
...................................... NOW The fun stuff! Time to add some vanity into this engine build to spice it up a bit. Afterall, we should all know that shiny parts make more horsepower, right?
Took my Intake Manifold to the sandblasters....
Before:
After:
The results are.A-M-A-ZING!!! I'll be hittin it with some high temp clear coating to maintain this finish on it.... I'm very happy with the results.
That's all for now..... more pics to come as the parts come in. And thus begins my Volvo journey..... Thoughts/Comments are more than welcome!
Oh, and by the way.... my name is Jon in case we haven't met. Stay tuned.......
I need a favor. Even if you don't live there but plan to be in the area in the next month or two, that would work just fine.
Hey everyone,
I figured it was high time that I did a quick little intro to myself, as I've been popping up on the Facebook site a bit, and buying things off a couple of members.
I'm a huge gearhead, torn between the recklesseness of two wheels, and the unbeatable safety of Volvo. I started playing around with 70s/80/90s bikes about three and a half years ago, and have been driving Volvos and Honda's since the day I got my license. I learned to drive in the snows of Ontario, so living in British California is a nice change of pace. Short winters, great roads, amazing scenery... and no rust on most cars. 80s models everywhere here. I love it.
My rides to date (nine years of driving)

1990 Integra GS Girlfriends car, but I borrow it all the time.
I do all my own work, as well as a quite a bit of work for my friends as well.
I wanted to be an Army Vehicle tech, however I flunked the vision test. I then spent 7 years in the Navy, working as a Cook on the ships. I suffered an injury, and then was unable to sign another contract due to medical reasons. That was 4 months ago. In 6-7 months I will be moving to Alberta, in pursuit of work (some kind of Engineering or Technician). Until then, I modify my cars and bikes, waiting for the day that I receive any form of compensation or retraining.
Anyways, rant over.
I want to keep pushing my own fabrication and design skills, and get into an industry that's a little more intellectually challenging than my previous career. My options are still up in the air, though. While I wait, I learn, and mod. It's a pretty sweet gig...
Thanks for your time,
RageWORTH/ aka Simon/ aka Sketchy Downstairs Guy.
(I'll get some pics of my wagons up soon. I need to organize my photos first.)

Daniel new member here from the North Island New Zealand (kiwiland) I have been out of the volvo game for the past year or so, but the itch has gotten to me again! Picked up this 96 854R for $5000.00NZD or $4000.00USD. Was trying to find a manual one again, but alas none to be found, but have found a crashed 97 S70 T5-M which i will be taking the transmission kit from to convert.
I already have:
New 19T
Stage 3 E-tune
3" DP
Quaife LSD
D2 Coilovers
and will progress from there. I used to have a 97 S70 T5-M with a ton of work done, but failed WOF, and was going to be just a track car but alas other needs came first
Anyway just picked this up with 170K or 105,000 miles garage maintained immaculate condition. Going to remove tow-bar, car just passed WOF and has REG, but am excited to be in the volvo game again!
here goes my second attempt for the write up of my build for my volvo 850 t-5r hope you all enjoy. comment and suggestions for what could be done to improve are alway welcomed.
it all started with my first car a 96 volvo 850r that i purchased when i was 16 it was black with a tan interior R with minor upgrades such as catback custom 3" exaught and ipd tune that i bought for 2000. being 16 with a quick car i started to hang around street races friday night. after about 8 months i bought the car the transmission went out from street racing. i started to look on craigslist for a parts car or a used transmission when one day i find a yellow 95 t5R crashed for 600 after about a week begging the owner to sell it to me and no part it out i went to pick up the car with my dad. [/URL]">http://
when i got it home my father and i fell in love with the car and instead of using it to fix my 850r we had my neigbor fix what it needed and have it the front clip painted. when i was done it was beautiful i had fallen in love
after about 2 months i bought a ard tcv and first time i stepped on it i blow the motor. i ended up going to the local pick and pull junk yard and buying a engine off a 96 850 turbo and swaped out the engine it had ( it had a 2.5 na motor that some one turboed)
about 6 months of owning the car i needed more performance and i bought a 5 speed swap kit for a local. after trying to look for someone i would trust to swap in the transmission i had no luck and my 16 year old friend and i 17 year old with a 100 bucks with of habor freight tools did the swap it took us about 3 week to finsh it with school in work we worked on it when ever we had time. i did timing belt, water pump, r clutch, rear main seal, cap and rotor, nrg spark plug wires, m56h transmission.
the 5 speed swap was the best modifation i have done to date it felt like i had just bought a new car. after about 6 months of that i let my friend drive the car and he blow out 3rd gear completely. so i had to take out my engine out again for the 3rd time in a year and a half. after another vist to the local junk yard i found a nother m56h and bought it. but onice the engine was out again i decied to upgrade the engine. 3" exaught from old 850r, 3" dp, green injectors, na intake manifold, na throdle body, R exaught manifold, kkk-24 with 6+6 ard billit wheel, fmic, and ard blue tune, h and r springs, bilstein shocks, tki endlinks.

some lucky finds i have found in ebay, junk yard, forums since ipd strct brace, e code head lights, hre 543r, kw v2 coil overs, evolved sway bars, 5 sets of white injectos, 2 sets of blue injectos.
now for what the my car looks like now

my plans for my for the car would be keep it for ever and turn it to a track toy/ autoX
if you guys have suggestion to what should be next i would love to hear it thanks
I have been in the Volvo game for years, i left for a year or so, and had the itch to buy another R so i bought this
So i was happy with that edition to the stable. Well I saw a Nissan Skyline 350GT, and having owned an Infiniti M45S, i have a soft spot for them, so now i am at a quandry as what to do. Mod the Volvo and keep the Skyline as a daily or keep the volvo as a daily, and mod the skyline.
I have had modded volvos before and love turbo cars, but i can also turbo the skyline.
Volvo - 250hp euro-spec
Skyline - 350hp Nismo spec
Heres a few pics, but i think i'm in love again
WhAT TO DO!!? I'm keeping both and the volvo is Immaculate, but in terms of luxury the Skyline wins
-Nismo Tune
-Cusco Strut Brace
-Nismo struts/springs
Hello everyone I'm hosting a track day at Thunder Hill on December 20th but I wasn't sure where to post it, so kinda procrastinated haha. The price ranges from $120 to $140 depending on skill level, higher groups cost most but have less cars/traffic in them. Our Driving School and High Intermediate Classes are very close to full at the moment, but there is space in Low Intermediate and Advanced. Most info you'll need is provided in the link below.

The skidpad is also available for drifting as well, Cost is $50. There are not many people signed up for this at all at the moment so you'll have pretty much all day to drift as much as you want.

I would love to see some Volvos out there and could meet some people off the forum as well.
Don't hesitate to message me if you have any questions.
Just came across this
Hi there, just thought i would introduce myself. Bought my third volvo today, and this one needs some engine work or replacement so this looks like the place to gather some much needed intel.
Interesting news across the wires over the last couple of days. Volvo is dramatically overhauling their approach to selling in what they're calling the Volvo Way to Market. This includes:
1. Reduced participation in auto shows
2. Online sales
3. Dealerships becoming more of a center of Swedish experience
4. Personal technicians for each customer
Looks and sounds very much like Elon Musk's endeavors for the Tesla brand. It will be interesting to see how this shift will impact other auto brands' own approaches and what this means for the future of the headlock dealers have in the US market.
