New Member About To Buy A Volvo

Hello everyone, I am Dange and i live out in southern arizona,   I joined up because im looking to possibly buy a volvo wagon soon and im going to look around for some info and advice,   Its mainly going to be a daily driver about all i know right now is i want the turbo 5cyl.  and reasonably low mileage.   but thats about all i know what to look for.

Im new to volvos but not  to modding cars i used to have a turbocharged mazda miata  and I currently own a supercharged corvette that's rather heavily modified to the point i decided i need a daily.  so im not planning on going all out performance on the volvo so ill probably stop at intake/exhaust/tune to make it a bit more fun   I just want something to get around town and be able throw all my stuff in load up a few friends and the dog and go snowboarding or camping etc  in any weather in comfort

Well it all started with $600 and a 2 hour drive up to Redmond to pick this up.

I did a stage zero on the car only to have a severe miss fire on cylinder 3. The missfire was due to this.

I'm Back - With A New 745 Beater

Wow, I haven't been on here in ages. Life has a way of making things complicated I guess ...

Anyways, for those of you who remember me you may recall that I have some car commitment issues. Besides my S60, I have a habit of swapping cars just about as fast as I can. Buy one, build one, sell/trade. Sometimes I have 2 or 3 ... But most of the time I have 4, 5, or 6 ...

Last time I was on here my beater was a 1989 BMW 525i. I think I may have even posted about it. There's been a whole lot of cars since then though.

Which brings me to the point of this thread.

A couple of months ago I was in the market for a new beater (even though I had 3 other cars). After some craigslist hunting I  managed to track down a 1992 745 with fantastic interior at a very reasonable price. I ran out and bought it immediately of course. Stage zero front to back until she was in tip-top shape. However, I'm not one to leave cars stock ...

Reblacked the trim/bumpers, dropped the front 2.5" and the rear 1.5", blacked out the grill center, deleted the muffler, JVC head unit and speakers, 10" sub and amp, Yakima roof rack with custom cross bars and wood slats, lights, intake modified, custom lip, etc etc etc

I havent been on here in a while.  Kind of been out of the volvo scene even though i still drive an s70 t5.  I havent really touched the car in a while.  Just use it as my to and from work car.  Im planning on having it painted matte blue in the near future though.  Not sure what color i want to do the pegasus wheels.  Right now they are matte black.  Anyways, ive been doing a little restoration jobs for the past few years.  Thought i would post some of my work.  All the stuff i do is powder coated so it is tough and long lasting.  Just wanting to share with others.  This is not an ad to sell my services, im just showing off my work.

This is what the wrought iron rocking chair looked like when i got it.  Its an old piece and you cant buy them like this anymore.

Thank you for all your help. As a newbie mechanic I have come to depend on these forums as a great source on the internet for guidance and instruction.Volvospeed is one of my favorite places to visit, that's due to the active and helpful community found here. I hope to be as helpful to others as the internet's Volvo population has been to me, and continue to receive good advice and encouragement as I move down the road to a million plus miles in my T5. I will never be above correction, and will always jump in to offer insight whenever I think I can help. I imagine we are all in a similar situation, just doing the good human thing by helping our fellow travelers.thanks for reading this far. My current daily driver is a 1999 Volvo S70 T5 automatic with 180,000 miles, severe oil leaks, loss of power, Christmas tree dash lights, occasional electrical accessory glitches, an embarrassing alarm that sounds like a goat with a bad chest cold, possibly the wrong intake manifold, unknown history prior to me and severe neglect since I've had it as it was the only car for my young family and I couldn't afford to take it to a shop or have it in a million pieces in my driveway. My goal is to get at least stage zero(maybe three) and as I said earlier squeeze a million exhilarating miles out of this 2.4L L5 DOHC 20V engine in it's beautiful silver body. My questions will always have pictures and most likely be tldr, and I will always patiently await answers. Thank you for existing volvospeed, and thank you for accepting me.

Bbk Brackets

A week ago Andy was posting about some brackets he was designing for a Porsche 997 caliper to be adapted to his V70R.

E4C8B3E8-B206-4FCC-B395-A80E16DB09C6_zps

Had a friend 3D print a quick prototype of my porsche brake brackets for a test fit. Everything looks good so now they're off to be machined.

I hand machined and precision ground these to his specs and figured I'd show them off for you guys. The next batch will be fully automated on a CNC so I can compare. In machining these, I held a +/-0.0002" tolerance for all critical dimensions.

As the conversation Andy and I were having got lost in off topic somewhere, I figured I'd post here. I'm curious as to what else anyone here can come up with to machine. So far I'm looking into doing spacers and bushings. These all are just trial projects for me at my new job, but in the event I do gain interest in a few items, I'll be more than happy to get a Vendor license to machine whatever it is you guys want.

Here are the current brackets.

Viva Performance Enem Cam Group Buy Interest?

$

Hello everyone,

I am interested in getting a set of ENEM cams for my volvo and I figured others are as well.

I contacted Viva today and they said:

HI Matt,

Thank you for contacting us. We are open to the idea of a group buy, but it ultimately depends on the quantity and part number of the camshaft in question.

I am starting this thread to get together some interest on a GB for ENEM cams.

This is an interest thread only, by saying you are interested does not mean you are committing to buying them! I think if we can get around 10 buyers we can get a pretty good discount.

Here are the cams available:

http://www.vivaperformance.com/performance-camshafts-volvo/

Please post the part number and Model number you are interested in, in the following format so I can get a quote:

Name, PN, Model

  • Name: Simply Volvo PN: 35-78-010 Model: L9
  • Name: Modman PN: 35-78-090 Model: Y21
Thanks,

Matt

Beüst Tuning Hits The Dyno!

$

In preparation for a customer’s upcoming 20T swap we performed a dyno for a baseline for comparison. The dyno was performed on a Dyno-Jet at Dyno-Pro in Arvada CO. Ambient temperature in the shop was 72ºF, ambient pressure was 25inHG(12.4PSI).

The customer’s car is a mostly stock 96 850, but has a 15G with a 7cm turbine housing and a full 3” exhaust without a catalytic converter or muffler. He also has a 3" j-pipe intake and 50/50 water/methanol injection through a single 250cc nozzle.

He has been running an ARD green tune for the past year, so we decided to start the dyno session off with 4 pulls on the Green tune, 2 with water injection and 2 without.

Following the ARD pulls, we swapped in a Beüst ECU and fine tuned a road tune we had worked on 2 weeks prior. 7 additional pulls were performed, the final 3 were with water injection.

All runs were performed back to back with approximately 5 minutes in between runs for a cool down.

Matt%20Langstreth%202.jpg?dl=0

You can see the best 3 runs of the day overlaid here. As you can see the ARD tune produced more peak HP, 5WHP more, but Beüst was able to produce 30FT/lbs more peak torque. The real difference comes when looking at the power curves. The Beüst tune produced an additional 85ft/lbs and 57WHP than the ARD tune at 3,500 RPM. With that said, the Beüst tune did have quicker power curve fall off, but I believe this could have been remedied with additional time on the dyno.

Interestingly enough we were not able to gain any additional power from the use of water injection, hence the reason a curve without water injection was chosen.

Following this Dyno the Beüst project car (my car) was put on the dyno just for an idea on power output.

20G%20XTR%20AFR%20Dyno.jpg?dl=0

This is at approximately 21psi. I will post full details in my build thread.

You can find all of the 15G dyno sheets in Dyno-Jet's .drf file format here:

All 11 runs are included in the above .zip.

Hello All,

The months are getting colder, but at FCP we’re not cooling off.  We’ve dedicated our entire product team, me included, to a project making our catalog better, more accurate, and more comprehensive. We’re working our way through every category for several makes adding brands and parts, and building exclusive FCP kits.  We’ve never done a product buildout like this before.

I’m Jay, the Volvo Catalog manager here at FCP I’m happy to announce that our first expansion is completed, we’ve added literally hundreds of hand-crafted, newsuspension kits over the past month to our Volvo catalog.

Take a look around FCP Euro and you’ll see new kits, new brands, new photos, and soon a whole lot more.  We’ve also started our expansion in the brake category, adding hundreds of more kits over the next few weeks, some of which you can already see on our site.

I’m incredibly excited for everything we have planned for 2015, and we hope you are too. If you have any ideas, for new kits, don’t hesitate to let us know, I'm always looking for feedback.

Best Regards,
Jay VanGorden

Im one of the new guys and new to the volvo thing. I just bought a 97 850 NA about 3 months ago for 1,600. The car is super clean inside and out with about 180,000 on it. So the first thing I do is google 97 volvo problems and the pcv thing comes up all over the place. I checked and had the smoking dipstick thing so i did the pcv kit repair. without turning this into a giant rant I wanna thank everyone for the post on the overly complicated pcv system without the post and pics I would have been screwed. Since the fix I havnt checked for the smoking dipstick ( kind of afraid to). Any how thanks so much to everyone on here Im gonna head to another section and post about my 0440 code on the evap got a feeling im gonna be dropping the gas tank. ive checked everything from the charcoal canister all the way back to the gas tank.

How To Solve Volvo S80 Engine Idling Rough

$
0
0

My workshop received a Volvo S80 with more than 200,000 km a couple days ago. According to the customer’s description, the engine idle was rough all the time.

Fault code diagnosis:

The running speed was about 1400r/min when I startup the car, the engine ran at rough idle. And then I used Volvo Vida Dice 2014A to read the trouble code. It showed that something wrong with air throttle.

The following possible reasons are inferred from the problem:

1) Air throttle was so dirty.
2) Air throttle was damaged.
3) The wire harnesses of air throttle had problems.
4) Engine ECM was damaged.

To begin with, I took out the air throttle. After finish cleaning, I used the diagnostic tool Volvo Vida Dice 2014A to read the trouble code. It still showed that air throttle had problems.

Then, I used multimeter to measure the resistance of air throttle.

#1-#2 was 1.4Ω ( the standard value is 1.2~3.5Ω)
#2-#3 was 1368Ω (the standard value is 1000~1500Ω)
#2-#6 about 820Ω when closing the air throttle. About 1580Ω when it opened completely.
#2-#5 about 1480Ω when closing the air throttle. About 500Ω when it opened completely.

They were all normal. Therefore, the first two reasons can be deserted.

I found out the circuit diagram from diagnostic tool. And I tested the wire harness. I wanted to know whether the wire harnesses are workable3, which were between the plug of air throttle and engine control module. The results showed that six harnesses can work.

So, harnesses had no problems.

Next, I used multimeter to measure the voltages of air throttle plug terminals. The results showed that the voltages were normal.

Then I tested the wire harnesses of air throttle carefully. I found that the harnesses were twined by gummed tapes. I took out the tapes. And found that two harnesses were twined together. When the engine temperature got higher or the engine was shaking, the voltage of these two harnesses increased. It caused the signal difference. That was why engine ran at rough idle.

Trouble shooting:

I welded the two harnesses again. I started the car again which is in normal work. Trouble was figured out via Volvo Vida Dice 2014A.
